Flickr is a image based and video based social media which hosts billions of images from everyone from professional photographers to people taking photos with their mobiles. Over 3.5 million images are uploaded to the site every day.
Flicker was launched in 2004 by Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. It was originally made to be an online based multiplayer game however these plans were shelved. Flickr then evolved into a platform where real-time photo exchanges could happen through a service called FlickrLive. In March 2005, Flickr was brought by Yahoo for a reported cost of $22-25 million. Following the integration, Yahoo's own photo site Yahoo Photos was closed down and users were encouraged to migrate to Flickr.
