David Benioff and D. B. Weiss came up with the idea of adapting George R. R. Martin's novels to a tv series in 2006. HBO got the rights to the production of Game Of Thrones, the production later started in January 2007, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss were to right every episode but one, as George R. R. Martin was to write one episode per season. The budget for the first season was estimated between $50–60 million, but by season two each episode have a budget of a round about $6 million.

Principle photography was due to start in July 2010, the primary location was in Belfast, Northern Island and various other locations including Sterling, Scotland. The producers considered filming the whole show in Scotland but later decided that Northern Island was more suitable. Filimg was also set in Malta in the first season for the shooting of the Southern scenes.

Visual Effects

HBO hired the British VFX company BlueBolt for the large amount of visual effects needed throughout the series. The majority of environmental builds were produced as 2.5D projects, to give the viewer a good sense of perspective, but also helps keeping the programming as minimal as possible. Pixomondo, a German established visual effects company later took on the job for visual effects in the upcoming series as the demand was becoming to complex for BlueBolt to continue.
