V Festival is an annual music festival in England with locations in Hyland Park, Chelmsford and Weston Park, Staffordshire. This festival was predominantly a rock festival, however in previous years more artists from other genres have been included in the line up, pop being the most common. V festival is sponsored by Virgin Media.
The first V Festival was held in 1996 and was called V96. The idea came from Jarvis Cocker, Pulp frontman, who decided he wanted to play two outdoor shows in one weekend. The band's promoter got together and came up with the idea of holding two outdoor gigs in Warrington and Hyland Park, Chelmsford. They then also came up with the idea of asking other artists to perform as well. In 1999, Weston Park became to northern site for the festival as previous sites in Warrington and Leeds could not accommodate for the growing popularity of the festival. The size of the festival has grown from two stages and one tent in 1996 to four stages and one tent in 2014. In 2006, the festival sold all 130,000 in a record time of under 3 hours.
